Belshaw Consulting was founded by Alan Belshaw to help organizations and professionals navigate the increasingly complex world of cybersecurity, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, systems engineering, and technology leadership.
35+ Years of Experience
Alan has spent more than 35 years designing, securing, and leading enterprise technology programs across government and commercial organizations. His career has included roles as a security architect, systems engineer, cloud security specialist, cybersecurity instructor, and technical leader responsible for protecting mission-critical systems.
Industry Experience
Throughout his career, Alan has worked with organizations ranging from small businesses to Fortune 500 companies and U.S. Government agencies. His experience spans cloud security, Zero Trust architecture, risk management, DevSecOps, identity and access management, security governance, compliance, vulnerability management, threat modeling, security operations, and enterprise architecture.
Cybersecurity Education
As an (ISC)² Authorized Instructor for more than a decade, Alan has taught hundreds of cybersecurity professionals around the world, helping them prepare for certifications including CISSP, CCSP, CSSLP, and CGRC. He is known for explaining complex technical subjects in a practical, easy-to-understand way without sacrificing technical depth.
Rapid Technological Change
Technology is evolving faster than most professionals can realistically keep up. New security frameworks, cloud platforms, regulations, architectures, AI technologies, and industry terminology appear constantly, while the amount of information available about them continues to grow.
Information Overload
The problem is not a lack of information—it is too much information. Most professionals simply do not have the time, or the need, to read thousand-page manuals, lengthy standards, vendor documentation, and technical textbooks just to understand the concepts that matter to their jobs.
Beyond Your Expertise
At the same time, professionals are increasingly expected to understand technologies outside their immediate area of expertise. They need enough knowledge to participate intelligently in meetings, evaluate risks, review architectures, lead projects, interview for new positions, communicate with specialists, and make informed business and technical decisions.
The Missing Middle Ground
What is often missing is a practical middle ground between a superficial internet explanation and an exhaustive technical reference: a concise, affordable, professional desktop resource that explains what something is, why it matters, how it fits into the enterprise, what risks and decisions are involved, and what you actually need to know about it.
Practical Knowledge, Simplified
Belshaw Consulting developed the Just Tell Me What I Need To Know - series to provide that missing middle ground. Rather than expecting busy professionals to work through thousand-page technical manuals, complex standards, or endless vendor documentation, the series distills complicated subjects into the practical knowledge professionals actually need.
Know What Matters
Each book is designed to help readers quickly understand a subject, why it matters, how it fits into the modern enterprise, the risks and considerations involved, and the decisions they may need to make.
Make Informed Decisions
The objective is not to turn every reader into a specialist. It is to provide enough knowledge to ask the right questions, understand the answers, communicate confidently with technical teams, evaluate options, recognize risks, and make informed decisions. The result is a collection of practical professional references designed to make complex technology accessible, useful, and manageable.
You don't need to know everything. You just need to know what you need to know.
Practical Professional References
The Just Tell Me What I Need To Know series is a collection of practical professional references covering the technologies, disciplines, and practices shaping cybersecurity and modern enterprise technology.
Broad Technology Coverage
The series spans subjects including cybersecurity, cloud security, risk, governance, security operations, DevSecOps, Zero Trust, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and systems engineering. Each book is designed to stand on its own while also complementing the others, allowing readers to build a broader understanding of how these disciplines connect across the enterprise.
Built for Working Professionals
These are not exhaustive textbooks or step-by-step product manuals. They are desktop references for working professionals—designed to explain the essential concepts, terminology, risks, architectures, processes, and decisions associated with each subject.
Knowledge for Every Stage
Readers can use them to learn a new area, refresh existing knowledge, prepare for interviews or meetings, support projects, or simply keep pace with an industry that never stops changing.
Together, the series provides a practical library of the knowledge today's technology and cybersecurity professionals need to know.
